Accented Body is a site for creative exploration and research around two primary concepts:

  • the body as site
  • the body in site

Conceived by Cheryl Stock, it began as a two year international interdisciplinary collaboration, culminating in a multi-site interactive promenade performance for the 2006 Brisbane Festival. This creative and practice-led research project has since become an platform for new and ongoing investigations around expanded concepts of the moving body.

It was preceded by two decades of Cheryl Stock’s directorial, choreographic and performance practice with a focus on Australian dance and intercultural performance with Asia, and continues with ongoing dance-led site specific practice projects.

Parallel to these creative works Cheryl Stock engages with and writes about contemporary dance as well as practice-led research and higher education pedagogy, particularly in relation to investigating embodied practice, live and virtual performance, creative arts and interdisciplinary environments. She also works as an artistic advisor and mentor to emerging artists, dance companies and early career academics.

Current interests focus on the body as an interdisciplinary site of mediation and transformation, cultural hybridity, the place of memory in creative works and concepts around connectivity. The contexts for these explorations are the body in virtual, architectural, natural and cultural sites, through practice and publications.

The most recent site-specific project is Twilight, under the aegis of Dance North for its 30th anniversary season. It was performed in October 2015 at the Jezzine Barracks overlooking the Coral Sea in the tropical city of Townsville. An outdoor promendade performance for and with the community featuring 167 participants across 14 sites,Twilight took the audience on an experiential journey of 'sensing sea, sky and earth through conection to place'.

Naik Naik (Ascent), was an Australian / Malaysian collaboration for the 2013 Melaka Art and Performance Festival, 22-24 November. Occurring at three sites in the world heritage listed town of Melaka, Naik Naik was a multi-site promenade performance  physically exploring the notion of ‘ascent’.  An evocation of place through performative contemplations, this processional experience lingers on the traces that remain hidden or partially and silently exposed, interwoven with personal and cultural stories related to the sites, in a celebration of the present. See projects for more details.

From 6-11 July the 2014 World Dance Alliance (WDA) Global Summit was hosted by by Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) and convened by Cheryl Stock in her role as WDA Secretary General. Taking place in Angers, France, in the Loire Valley, the Summit explored the theme Contemporising the Past; Envisaging the future through an international  gathering comprising a conference, showcase performances and an intensive choreolab, with almost 500 particpants from 37 counries. International refereed proceedings edited by Cheryl Stock and Patrick Germain Thomas was published in late 2015.

Accented Body is committed to sharing research and practice in the above and allied areas.
